Re: Using the debugger

When you change the code in Object>>#halt halt "{ Pragma: +optSpace }" "enter debugger with halt-message. The error is reported by raising the HaltSignal exception." <resource: #skipInDebuggersWalkBack> Smalltalk ignoreHalt ifTrue:[^ self]. "/ don't send #halt: here - ask cg...

Re: Using the debugger

This is a bug in the debugger. It works in the receiver inspector, but not in the context inspector (at the left). Until we have fixed it, you can work around this bug:

Type an assignment in the text view (like "var:=something"), select this text and press doIt (Ctrl+d)

Re: Smalltalk/X on Windows 7 x64

Smalltalk/X works well in in Windows7/64 (as does expecco, which is based on Smalltalk/X).
Currently, it runs in 32-bit mode, so you don't have the 64-bit address space for your Smalltalk objects.

Re: Socket>>setOption does not support IP_ADD_MEMBERSHIP

Additional to using byte coded and just-in-time compilation, ST/X comes with a Smalltalk-to-C compiler (stc) to compile Smalltalk to C code. Methods containing C-Code need to be compiled with stc. You need as well a C compiler and linker in order to compile the generated C code. In Linux, the standa...

Re: changing default image extension from .img

Please apply/fileIn the attached ImageSuffix.chg patch. You can then change the ObjectMemory>>suffixForSnapshot method to your preferred extension. Note than when starting smalltalk, you have to explicitly use the '-I snapshotFilename.ext' option.

ImageSuffix.chg
Patch to allow changing the suffix of a snapshot file from 'img' to an arbitrary suffix.

Re: What is the best way to create optional input pins?

This is right - you can freeze an input pin in the block description schema to both constants or environment variables. As long as such an input pin is neither connected nor frozen in the step (this is where a block description is used), the pin will get this frozen value as default. Note, that usua...

Re: Directory usage

This two code sniplets print the file names on the Transcript (ST/X Launcher). The first one works only in Windows. Look at the method category 'enumerating-contents' in the Filename class for more methods that e.g. walk down a directory hierarchy. 'C:\' asFilename directoryContentsAsFilenamesDo:[:e...

Solved: rdoit timeouts under linux/unix

The package goodies/rdoit can be used to execute some Smalltalk expressions inside a running ST/X image from the command line. The package consists of the rdoit client, a C-program and the rdoit server running inside ST/X (you can enable/configure the server under Launcher->Settings->Communication->...

Solved: Data Execution Prevention (DEP) - stx doesn't start

In Windows Vista, Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003 SP1, DEP (Data Execution Prevention) was changed from opt-in to opt-out. In Windows Vista SP1 and Windows XP SP3, Smalltalk/X uses an API call, to circumvent DEP. In other Systems this API call is not available and DEP leads to Smalltalk/X (up...

Solved: vmware freezes when sound card is disconnected

We are expiriencing a problem with VMware (vmplayer 2.5.2 build-156735 host: SuSE Linux 11.1, guest Windows XP). When ST/X tries to play a sound with the MessageBeep() API, VMware grabs the mouse pointer and the keyboard, and no further actions are possible until vmware is killed (via remote login)....
