What are Autoloaded Classes?

Postby fmadrid » 3. Dec 2008, 18:15

Autoloaded classes are loaded on demand, whenever the first message is sent to it (usually, an instance creation message).
Technically, this is done by installing a stub class initially, which will fileIn the real class whenever first used and forward the message to the now-loaded real class. This means that all these classes do not eat up lots of memory space. However, applications using autoloaded classes will come up slower (due to the compilation) when started the first time. After the initial load, these should behave just like any other class.

You can force a class to be loaded into the system, either by evaluating the expression:

className autoload

or by using the browsers load function from its classLists popupMenu, or by double-clicking on the class in the browser.

Autoloaded classes are installed during early startup by the "smalltalk.rc" script, by invoking the method:

Smalltalk installAutoloadedClasses.

which will search for all files called "abbrev.stc" under all directories found along the packagePath. Notice, that this might take a long time (10 or more seconds) depending on the number of directories found and the speed of you disk/network drives.

If you dont want autoloaded classes to be installed (but instead load your required code manually or via package-import), you can start ST/X with a "--quick" command line argument. This prevents the script from doing this and results in an almost instant startup.

a few notes to "autoloading":
I've added this mechanism in those early days, when memory was expensive and my machine only had 2Mb of it.
So I did not want to have all the seldom used stuff in the image, but still get it almost transparently whenever I need it. (initially, it even had an automatic unload, after some time, if there were no more instances  )
Nowadays, as windows itself needs 1gig to boot and show some transparent windows ;) , the few megabytes are really peanuts and it is questionable if the autoload feature should not be eliminated. Over time, you will see more and more stuff going into the packaged dlls.
Autoloading is a bit dangerous, when an app is to be deployed as standAlone exe: if you forget to add these classes to the delivery, you will encounter a runtime failure. On the other hand, you dont want to change the packaging of the standard dlls - so you have to add such missing classes to your own ddls - which is somewhat tricky and error prone.
So eventualy, we will probably get rid of them.
